How Can You Not Love That Face? :)

Is This Spot Taken?

Jewel Box

Amazing colors; less-than-amazing personality.  I was tolerated by one of these once.  He appeared one day in the pine windbreak, and kept his distance for a few days.  But after he discovered the cat food he quickly decided to grace us with his presence.  I never did get him to eat out of my hand, and he was even picky about the cat food.  He'd only eat one color of the three. And wouldn't touch the commercial bird feed we got him unless he was especially hungry and those pesky cats had somehow consumed the good stuff.  Then he pecked angrily at the bird food and gave me disgusted looks from a black eye as hard as obsidian.

He liked to perch above the ground but not too high.  The pickup truck was just right, and he made an amazing-looking hood ornament.  But we had to hose off the hood every time we wanted to drive it.  He'd poop with the most regal look on his face, then walk away and drag his long tail feathers through it.  Kinda killed any storybook image of elegance.

It was not really an occasion for sadness when he finally tired of calling for a mate among the cats.  He moved up the road a couple miles, and we could coil up the hose and leave it unused for weeks at a time.  So long, Spot, and best of luck to you.  Don't come back.
