Where have I been lately? Well, it's kinda like this . . .

Me and Duke are minding our own business down on the farm. Just sittin' in the barn, comfy on the hay bales. Well, we aren't doing nothing but are getting hungry anyway, and Duke is startin' to look at me kinda intently. So we decide to go for a walk.

Well, ol' Duke isn't the most sociable of friends, so right away he has a difference of opinion with the neighbor.

Then we wander too close to a red-wing blackbird's nest. They have a reputation for being nasty. At least I think it was a blackbird; biggest one I ever seen! He dive-bombs us and we get outta there real quick.

Next we pass a tree with a whole bunch more of them blackbirds in it. I never seen so many! An' we decide right then an' there to turn around, cause the further we go the more trouble we seem to find.

Of course Duke is leading, he's a little bit of a control freak in matters like that. He musta took a wrong turn somewhere cause we end up on the wrong side of the river. There isn't anything for it but to cross the bridge.

Now, Duke's not exactly comfortable with heights. Water neither, if it comes to that. So he's grabbing me and holding on, and we almost end up in the drink. My sure-footedness saves the day, if I do say so myself.

But our detour has a happy ending when we come upon the prettiest bird I ever seen. Duke is awestruck too. “Almost too pretty to eat”, he says. “It surely is,” I say. “Almost.”
