Woodland Palace
Francis Park, just northeast of Kewanee, Illinois, is a tiny gem in rolling farm country. Woodland Palace was the home of Fred Francis, inventor and innovator, artist and poet. Born near Kewanee in 1856, he graduated from the Illinois Industrial University, Urbana, and then invented tools for the Elgin watch factory. At that time employees received the royalties from their inventions, so he was able to retire at age 32. In his self-built home he was ahead of his time with such things as a water purification system and air conditioning. When Francis died he bequeathed his life's work to the city of Kewanee, to be maintained as a park and museum.

Elephant?
A birch tree. River birch, to be exact, which is more robust and spreading than the delicate upright paper birches.
